Settings¶
Radius Search has two pieces of setup: a per-category toggle that decides which coordinates feed the search, and a per-listing-type tab for units and region.
1. Turn on the location category¶
The extension reads coordinates from a location category on your listing type — the same category you use for a location map.
Go to Listings → Categories, open your location category, and in Location Options:
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Is Location | Must be on. This marks the category as holding places rather than plain terms. |
| Use for Radius Search | Turn this on. Each listing assigned to this category then gets its term's coordinates copied onto it whenever it is saved. |
Only the first enabled category is used
If more than one location category has Use for Radius Search on, each listing uses the first one it belongs to. Enable it on a single category.
Coordinates on the terms¶
Open each term in that category (each city, region, or lot) and confirm the Latitude and Longitude fields are filled. The Location Preview map on the term screen sets them for you when you place the pin.
A term with no coordinates produces listings that can't be found by distance — they're simply left out of radius results.
Keeping coordinates in sync¶
Coordinates flow to listings automatically:
- Saving a listing copies its term's coordinates onto it.
- Editing a term's latitude/longitude re-syncs every listing on that term (in the background, a few seconds after you save the term).
- Turning "Use for Radius Search" on or off re-syncs the whole listing type.
If background tasks (wp-cron) are disabled on the site, or you just want to be certain the data is right, run a full re-sync from the command line:
It reports how many listings were updated, cleared, or already correct. Add
--type=<slug> to limit it to one inventory type.
2. Radius Search type tab¶
Listing Type* → Settings → Radius Search tab
*Your listing type may be Cars, Boats, Trucks, Trailers, etc. Settings are per type.
| Setting | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Distance Unit | Miles or Kilometers. Sets the unit shown in the radius dropdown and the distance shortcode. Visitors can override it if you enable the Miles / KM toggle on the filter element. |
Miles |
| Search Region | Automatic (US & Canada) detects a US ZIP versus a Canadian postal code by its format. Choose United States only or Canada only to constrain lookups to one country. |
Automatic |
Once this is set, add the filter — see Radius Filter Element.
