Groups

Groups let you bundle related listings together automatically, based on rules - a promotion, a physical lot, a themed collection ("Weekend Specials", "Certified Pre-Owned"). Membership isn't assigned by hand: a listing is in a group whenever it matches that group's rules, and it drops out the moment it stops matching.

Groups are managed per inventory type at [Your Type] > Groups.

Creating a group

At [Your Type] > Groups, create a group, give it a name, and add one or more rules (category value, listing ID, or date). Any listing matching the rules joins the group automatically - there's no separate "add listing to group" step on the listing edit screen.

A listing has to match every rule to be in the group. A group with no rules matches nothing. You can set the badge and discount (see Adjustments below) while creating the group.

To pin a specific listing into a group regardless of its other field values, add a rule with category "Listing ID" and that listing's ID as the value.

Priority (when a listing matches more than one group)

A listing can match multiple groups' rules at once. If those groups both try to apply an adjustment (see below) that conflicts - two different badges, two different discounts - only one can win.

Drag groups up or down on the Groups screen to set that order. The group nearer the top has higher priority: if a listing matches it and a lower group, the top group's adjustments are the ones that get applied.

Adjustments

Each group can automatically apply, to every listing that matches its rules:

  • A badge.
  • A price discount (percent or fixed amount, shown on the frontend only).

These clear themselves automatically once a listing no longer matches the group, when you change the group's rules or its adjustments, and when you delete the group. A group only takes back what it applied itself: a badge you picked by hand on a listing is left alone, and so is a badge another group applied last.

Badges applied by a group before this tracking existed are not recognised, so they stay on the listing until you change them.

Using groups

Groups are handy for:

  • Promotions - collect everything in a sale into one group and apply a discount/badge to all of them at once.
  • Organization - keep listings from a particular lot, source, or theme together.
  • Display - surface a group's listings together on your site (via "View Matching" on the Groups screen, or by building a listing query around the same rules).

Groups are per inventory type, so each type keeps its own groupings.

Next: flag individual listings with Badges, or organize by attributes with Categories.
