Image Optimization (Dealer.Pics)¶
Dealer.Pics shrinks your listing photos, converts them to modern formats, removes backgrounds and adds a watermark. Smaller photos load faster, which helps shoppers and search. Everything is done in the background by the Dealer.Pics service, so you don't wait on it.
Open the Dealer.Pics tab in the DMS Settings and switch on Enable Dealer.Pics.
Your site must be reachable from the internet
Dealer.Pics sends the finished image back to your site. A local or password-protected development site can send photos but won't receive the results.
When photos are processed¶
- When you save a listing, any gallery photos not yet processed are queued.
- During an import, new listing photos are queued the same way.
- From the Media Library, you can send a single photo by hand or batch-optimize everything (see below).
A photo is only sent once. After that it carries its result, and saving the listing again does nothing.
Settings¶
Optimization¶
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Output Format | Keep Format compresses the file as it is. Convert to WebP or Convert to AVIF also changes the format. AVIF is smallest; WebP is the safer choice for older browsers. |
| Compression | Lossy gives the smallest files with a small, usually invisible quality drop. Lossless keeps every pixel but saves less. |
| Quality | 0 to 100 for lossy compression. 85 is the default and a good balance. |
File Output¶
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Max Dimensions | Largest width and height in pixels. Bigger photos are scaled down. Leave blank to keep the size. |
| Keep Original Image | Saves the original file as a backup before replacing it, so you can restore it later. |
| Strip Metadata | Removes EXIF data such as camera model and GPS location. |
| Remove Outdated Image Sizes | Deletes thumbnail files for sizes that are no longer registered, such as ones left behind by plugins you removed. |
Background Removal¶
Turn on Remove Background to cut the vehicle out of its surroundings.
- Apply To: First Image Only (the main photo, the cheaper choice) or All Images.
- Replacement Background: Transparent, a solid Colour, or an Image from your Media Library, such as a showroom floor.
Watermark¶
Under Watermark, choose a logo image and set where it goes. Position, Opacity, Scale and Padding are all adjustable, and a live Preview lets you try it on a sample photo. The watermark is burned into each photo as it is optimized, so turn it on before you process a batch.
Auto-Refill Credits¶
Switch on Auto-Refill to buy a Top-Up Package automatically when you reach 50 credits left. Pick the package you want.
Credits¶
| Action | Cost |
|---|---|
| Optimize or convert a photo | 1 credit |
| Optimize with background removal | 5 credits (1 plus 4) |
- Each plan includes a monthly allowance that resets on the 1st of the month.
- Credits you buy as extra packs never expire. Free credits are used first.
- If a photo can't be made smaller, DMS keeps the original and no credit is charged.
- Your balance (Free, Monthly, Paid and Total) shows at the top of the Media Library, with a Buy More button.
- If credits run out, photos simply stay as they were. Nothing breaks, and processing resumes after the monthly reset or a top-up.
In the Media Library¶
Click a photo to see its details. After processing you'll see how much smaller it got. From there you can:
- Send a single photo to be optimized, converted, or background-removed.
- Restore the original, if you kept originals.
- Cancel a photo that is still waiting in the queue.
Batch Optimize¶
Batch Optimize at the top of the Media Library processes photos you already have:
- Click Batch Optimize.
- Choose the Operation (optimize, WebP or AVIF).
- Optionally tick Remove background. This adds 4 credits per image and multiplies the total, so check the estimate.
- Tick Re-process images that are already optimized only if you've changed your settings and want them redone.
- DMS shows an estimate of how many images and credits it will use. Confirm, and the photos are queued and handled in the background.
For developers: WP-CLI¶
# Optimize every image not yet processed
wp dms optimize images
# One image, or force a redo
wp dms optimize images --id=123
wp dms optimize images --force
# Preview without spending credits
wp dms optimize images --dry-run
This uses 1 credit per photo, the same as the Media Library. It never removes backgrounds, so it never costs the 5-credit rate. If you run out of credits it skips the remaining photos. A photo that can't be made smaller is kept as is and costs nothing. --dry-run shows what would be processed and spends nothing.
The command also takes --batch=<size>, --poll-interval=<seconds> and --poll-timeout=<seconds> for large libraries.
